Do you know the feeling of wrapping yourself in a hard towel after the shower and at the same time longing for a “cozy” hug? Unfortunately, towels lose their softness and absorbency over time. Often it is due to the quality. Even when buying high quality goods, they become hard or less receptive after a while. The main causes: normal daily wear and tear and the revolutions during washing and spinning which flatten the loose pile and thus stick the fibers together. With these simple tips, your pestemal’s best turkish beach towels will stay soft and absorbent for a long time:
1. Choosing the right towel
There is a wide selection of towels in the shops. It is worth taking a closer look, because as with all fabrics, the material also plays a major role in terry toweling. Cotton is the most popular material for making towels because it feels comfortable on the skin and is insensitive. With the right yarn and the right technique, a soft towel is created that is still absorbent. Above all, the thickness is directly related to the absorbency. This can be tested if you hold the towel up to the light. If the light shines through, it is too thin. But also the softness, the weight and the color quality influence the basic quality. To keep towels permanently soft, we recommend choosing a towel with a botanical fiber such as Modal or Tencel. Both fibers are of natural origin and stay naturally soft even without adding fabric softener. These fibers are especially recommended if you live in regions with hard water.
2. Wash towels properly
It’s hard to believe, but there are also a few things to consider when washing towels. It helps to follow some washing recommendations so that no unpleasant soap residue collects in the fabrics. So the dosage of the detergent always plays an important role. Liquid detergent must be measured precisely according to the hardness of the water and the degree of soiling. Fabric softener sticks the fibers together, which is why it should be avoided. It goes without saying, however, that the laundry is sorted beforehand according to the color and washed at a number of degrees, depending on the color. The label tells you which temperature is best for your wash cycle.
3. In the dryer or on the line?
If you have a dryer at home, it will give your towels a soft and pleasant feel again. A higher load is to be preferred to a lower load on the drum, since too little load can cause too much friction in the dryer and fluff can then develop. In order to achieve more mechanics when fully loaded, tennis balls or similar can also be placed in the dryer.
If the towels are fresh off the line, manual work is required. Before hanging up the toweling, it is advisable to shake it out vigorously. Otherwise wrinkles will appear. In the best case, they are also dried in motion: So hang the line where the wind blows and no direct sunlight that dries towels to boards. In addition, the latter precaution serves to maintain the radiance of the colors.
4. Do not iron towels
When ironing, the fibers of the towel are compressed, which in turn affects the absorbency. It is sufficient to shake out the towels well after they dry, to strip them out and fold them carefully.
Last rescue: vinegar bath
If the towels are hard and not very absorbent, vinegar can help. Simply put the terry towels in a lukewarm mixture of mild vinegar and water, 1/8 of which should be vinegar, and soak for half a day. Then rinse the towels well. Now nothing stands in the way of a “cozy” hug.
